Beautiful Light of Our Family Loved Ones Share New Details About Renee Goods Final Morning

The family of Renee Nicole Macklin Good released new details this week about the hours leading up to her death, the same day they announced plans to pursue a civil investigation aimed at holding federal authorities accountable.
Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed on Jan. 7 during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in Minneapolis. She was fatally wounded by ICE agent Jonathan Ross after an encounter that has since sparked protests across the country.
In a statement issued Jan. 14, Good’s family described her as “the beautiful light of our family,” sharing personal memories as they push for answers in a case that has sharply divided public opinion.
The shooting happened after Good had driven her SUV forward near Ross when ordered to get out of the vehicle, federal officials said. The episode unfolded in a residential area during an operation to enforce immigration laws.
Video footage of the encounter has been widely shared online, and debate over the incident has grown heated. The Department of Homeland Security has said Ross acted appropriately, and that Good engaged in “domestic terrorism. Democratic leaders, however, have called for Ross to be arrested, and recent polling suggests a majority of Americans believe the shooting was unjustified.
In their statement, Good’s parents, siblings and attorneys said the fatal encounter followed what began as an ordinary morning.
“The family issued a statement expressing their deep appreciation for the outpouring of love and support shown to Renee and their loved ones during this time.”
The family said Good had just dropped her 6-year-old child off at school and was driving with her wife, Becca Good, and their dog when they came across federal agents conducting an operation in their neighborhood.
According to the family’s attorneys, the couple stopped their vehicle to observe what was happening, with the intention of supporting nearby residents affected by the enforcement action.
Becca exited the SUV before the shooting. Footage captured during the encounter shows Renee Good speaking calmly to agents. Among her final words, she can be heard saying, “I’m not mad at you.”
“She was our best friend,” the family said. “She had an endless capacity for love. Nae-Nae gave everything she had to care for her family, her friends, and even people she didn’t know.”
The family called Good their “protector and comforter” who brought laughter into every room she entered. “The hole she has left behind is much bigger than any words could ever describe,” the family said.
The latest information is released as, separately, the family announced that a Chicago-based law firm will conduct an independent investigation into Good’s death. The firm previously represented the family of George Floyd following his killing by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020.
Justice Department officials have said there is “no basis” for a federal investigation into the shooting.
Meanwhile, Department of Homeland Security leaders continue to defend the broader deployment of heavily armed federal agents in Minnesota, saying the actions are necessary to address fraud tied to immigration cases involving Somali communities.
For Good’s family, however, the focus remains on accountability — and on remembering the woman they say was taken from them far too soon.
“She brought joy wherever she went,” the family said. “That is how we want her to be remembered.”
